Towards personalized medicine: 10 years of discoveries and achievements of Labex IRON

-

When the ambitious scientific project Labex IRON was launched ten years ago, few could have imagined how far it would go. Back then, it seemed like something far away – the field of advanced nuclear medicine, where experiments were conducted with radionuclides and molecules that could “see” disease. But today, we are no longer in theory. Today, we live in a new medical reality, where personalized treatment is no longer science fiction, but a conscious, verified path to recovery.

The Labex IRON project has not only survived in a challenging scientific world, it has managed to combine laboratory discoveries, clinical research and international cooperation to change the approach to the very concept of therapy – from the abstract “treatment of a disease” to the concrete “help for a specific person”.

New Paradigm: How It All Began

In its early days, Labex IRON focused on developing radiopharmaceuticals—drugs that can non-invasively penetrate the body and reveal where disease is hiding. This approach, called molecular imaging, gave doctors a unique opportunity to “look inside” a patient, providing a detailed picture of the disease process.

But scientists went further. They didn’t just develop new isotopes — they linked them to molecules that can selectively accumulate in tumors. This is how theranostics emerged — combining diagnostics and therapy in one approach. What only recently seemed like a concept has now become a working tool in the fight against cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

Labex IRON became the link that connected physics, chemistry, biology and clinical medicine into a single system, where knowledge from one area was transformed into solutions for another. It was this interdisciplinary thinking that became the key to success.

When treatment becomes a personal matter

But the most significant turning point was the realization that every disease is unique, just as every person is unique. The same diagnosis in two different people is two completely different cases. One will respond to standard chemotherapy, and the other will not. Some people tolerate radiation therapy well, while others experience severe side effects.

Personalized medicine is not just a trendy term. It is a new way of seeing a patient. And Labex IRON was one of those who began to implement this approach in practice. Using PET scan data, metabolic profiles and molecular characteristics of tumors, researchers were able to build individual treatment plans that were selected not according to a template, but according to a living portrait of the disease.

Here, work with rare radionuclides such as astatine-211 is especially important. This element has proven to be not only effective, but also surprisingly precise – it allows one to act on pathological cells with almost no damage to healthy tissue. Such technologies were previously available only in laboratories, but today they have begun to enter clinical practice.

The path from test tube to hospital room

One of the distinctive features of Labex IRON is the ability to move science from the laboratory to real medical practice. And here we cannot fail to note the role of large infrastructure facilities, such as the Arronax and Cyrcé cyclotrons. They ensure the production of the necessary radionuclides, without which it would be impossible to so quickly translate scientific discoveries into the clinical plane.

In recent years, several radiopharmaceuticals developed within the framework of Labex IRON have passed preclinical trials and have entered medical use. Therapy regimens have been tested for cancer patients, as well as patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. These trials have shown that theranostics works. It helps doctors make more accurate decisions, diagnose the disease faster and adapt the treatment at each stage.

But even the most innovative technologies do not work without the human factor. The success of the project is impossible without the enthusiasm of doctors, the involvement of medical personnel and, of course, the willingness of the patients themselves to become part of scientific progress.

Focus on education and international cooperation

Labex IRON understood from the very beginning that in order to advance advanced medicine, it is necessary to prepare a new generation of scientists. Over the course of ten years, the project has carried out numerous internships, educational programs, and international exchanges. Young researchers have completed internships in France, Germany, Canada, and Japan, returning with new experience and fresh ideas.

Collaboration with universities and hospitals around the world has given the project that “international breath” that makes science come alive. Technologies and ideas born in France are developed in other countries, return in the form of new solutions and help thousands of patients all over the planet.

Ten years is just the beginning

Today, looking back on a decade of Labex IRON, it is impossible not to feel a sense of admiration. It is an example of how science can be not abstract, but deeply human. It is a story about how physics and chemistry save lives, how diagnostic devices become an extension of a doctor’s intuition, and how molecules become carriers of hope.

Yes, there are still many challenges ahead. Many methods require further standardization. New drugs must go through long stages of registration. And yet, the main thing has already happened: thinking has changed. Medical science has gone beyond the templates and acquired a personal, living character.

Labex IRON has become more than just a research project. It has become a symbol of a new era of medicine – precise, targeted, and human-oriented. And I want to believe that the next ten years will bring even more discoveries, even more saved lives, and even more scientific miracles that will be born from the desire to understand and cure.
